What rights do authors maintain? If your story is chosen for publication, Half Price Books will send you a release form, giving Half Price Books first publication rights. All entries must be previously unpublished. You, as the author, maintain all other rights. What age group is the book for? Is the contest for children writers only? The Half Price Books Bedtime Storybook Contest accepts entries from writers of all ages. There is no restriction on age or experience. However, all entries should be appropriate to be read to or by children ages eight (8) and under. Do I have to illustrate my own story? We do not require our authors to illustrate their own stories. We are in contact with several professional illustrators who gladly donate their work to this project. However, if you are an artist and would like to submit your artwork along with your story or poem, we encourage you to do so. If you do send an illustration and your story is chosen for publication, we cannot guarantee that your illustration will run with your story or poem, as the illustrations are judged separately. What do you pay in royalties? Because all proceeds of the Half Price Books Bedtime Storybook, Say Good Night to Illiteracy, are donated to literacy organizations across the country, we are not able to pay authors or illustrators for their work. All work is donated to the Half Price Books Community Service Fund. What benefits do writers get out of entering the Half Price Books Bedtime Storybook Contest? If your entry is chosen for publication, you will receive a Half Price Books Gift Card, ten (10) complimentary copies of Say Good Night to Illiteracy and possible publicity when we pitch you to media in your area. You also get published in a nationally distributed book. But best of all, you get the opportunity to help millions of people learn to read. |
